TRANSLATORS FORUM REPORT
RAWAFID CORPORATE TRAINING

Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

27-28 September 2004

Rawafid Corporate Training Center (RACT) has sponsored and organized the “Translators Forum” in cooperation with Saudi Association of Languages and Translation (SAOLT) during the period 27 to 28 September 2004 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The event took place in the conference hall, Al-Khozama Center, Al-Faisaliah Complex, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The event was the first in its kind in the region in terms of its professional focus. The forum had been widely publicized in the media.

The forum was hosted/inaugurated by HE Dr. Ali Al-Ghafeis, President of General Organization for technical education and vocational training.

The event was tailored to the translation/interpretation professionals as the target audience. Attendance was free of charge. Over 400 visitors from various regions came to attend the forum symposiums/activities.

Audiences were academics, policy makers, translation clients, practitioners, service providers, and educators/trainers.

FORUM PRESENTATIONS

17 presentations were presented in this event. Presentation selection preference was given to those based on research and empirical evidence. The forum presentations have covered the following areas of translation:

·        Session format was presentation (15 min) either in Arabic or English language.

·        Every session had a chairperson either an academic Professor or Professional Experienced Official from the government or private sector.

·        All work paper sessions were concluded by very fruitful discussions.

FORUM RECOMMANDATIONS

·        Create a market translation requirements database.

·        Establish a unified Arabic terminology database.

·        Improve translation profession career opportunities in both government and private sectors.

·        Establish specific translation/translator evaluation criteria in all fields.

·        Conduct this forum annually on the International Translator Day.

EXHIBITION

Exhibition included 4 magazine publishers, company recruitment offices and RACT. RACT published 5 translator guides on the occasion of the forum: Translator guide, Interpreter guide, Translators code of ethics, International translation associations' guide and the guide of Translation profession legal procedures in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

PUBLICATIONS

 The forum proceedings will be published and available to participants and interested in translation field by the end of October 2004. The proceedings will contain all the papers resented at the forum.

Saudi Association of Languages and Translation (SAOLT) has been established six months ago by the College of Languages and Translation, Imam Mohamed Bin Saud Islamic University to develop the academic and practical knowledge and professional performance of its members, provide consultancies and studies in the translation fields to public and private sectors, and conduct local and international translation conferences and symposiums.
